How's the wifi in Italy?
Updated: Jan 11, 2020
I live in a city that’s known for having some of the fastest internet speeds in the Western hemisphere… fiber optics, baby. Suffice it to say, I’m pretty spoiled when it comes to speedy internet and ubiquitous wifi.
While Italy and Sicily have progressed past only being able to connect at dedicated internet cafes, if you’re traveling there nowadays, you shouldn’t anticipate being to find a reliable wifi connection just anywhere.
Virtually all hotels and other accommodations will offer free wifi, but as we’ve learned, and especially if, say, your bed and breakfast is literally carved into the rock of a hillside, the connection isn’t always stable or even available.
We think traveling abroad is a great opportunity to unplug for a bit, but we also know that it’s just not always possible - especially if, like us, you need to be able to continue to conduct business no matter where in the world you are.
You should definitely check with your wireless provider to see what options they offer, but if you’re traveling as a couple or family, it’s not usually cost effective to add an international plan to multiple lines. What we’ve found to be our most reliable and cost effective option is traveling with a mobile wifi hotspot.
Companies like Skyroam offer the option to purchase or rent a hotspot device and purchase flexible data plans to suit your usage and needs, plus you can connect up to 5 devices to the Skyroam Solis device.
We brought the Solis along on our last trip and used it everywhere. We simply switched our phones to airplane mode so they would connect only via wifi and used messaging apps like WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger to make voice and/or video calls or send messages to loved ones back home for no extra charge. This way, we were also able to continue using our favorite navigation apps like Waze while driving through the Sicilian countryside.
And yes, you can also use your mobile hotspot to connect to Instagram to blow up your friends’ feeds with gratuitous gelato and drop-dead gorgeous scenery shots. No judgment here!
Full disclosure: I enjoyed our experience with Skyroam so much that I became an affiliate once we got back home. If you purchase using one of the links in this blog post, I do receive a modest commission. That being said, I don’t promote products that I don’t use personally. We truly had a great experience using Skyroam and are happy to recommend it to our Sicily South clients.
