Happy Hour: Palermo
I can’t tell you why, but I rarely participate in happy hour at home in the United States. I mean, I do try but it always just ends up turning into dinner preceded by extra drinks, so I don’t think that really qualifies as a true happy hour experience.
When I’m in Italy, though, we’re talking daily aperitivo - daily.
I’m sure a lot of this has to do with the fact that during traditional aperitivo hours in Italy I’m usually out and about, walking down the corso or somewhere equally as lovely. The quaint bars with their outdoor tables just beckon me to partake.
On a pleasant afternoon in May, my husband and I found ourselves in Palermo’s lovely Borgo Vecchio neighborhood, strolling down Via Nicolo’ Garzilli, just two blocks removed from swanky Via della Liberta’. We came across a delightful little shop, La Drogheria del Buongusto.
We were only looking for a small bite with a glass of something delicious and La Drogheria delivered. My husband had a traditional Sicilian dessert wine, zibibbo, I had a glass of bubbly prosecco, and we shared a delicious, small charcuterie tray. The price? €16, or $18. It doesn’t get much better than that.
If you’re in Palermo you won’t find a more impressive meat and cheese counter. The owner really knows his wine and makes an effort to carry an interesting selection of local bottles. We highly recommend a visit to La Drogheria del Buongusto the next time you need a happy hour in Palermo.
